The Protex - All We Wanna Do Is Rock'n'Roll

Formed in 1977 after The Clash's first Belfast gig and originally called Protex Blue after a song (about a brand of condom) on that seminal punk bands first LP. The name was later shortened to Protex to avoid comparisons with The Clash.

Aidan Murtagh (guitar) and Owen McFadden (drums) had both previously been in a pre-punk school band called The Incredibly Boring Band which also yielded The Peasants. After some well received radio sessions and a successful debut single on Good Vibrations Records which was licensed and reissued by Rough Trade to meet demand, Protex signed to Polydor Records UK in early 1979 along with another Northern band The Xdreamysts who were scouted at the same gig.
Protex relocated to London in the summer of 1979 after their first Polydor single, released another one shortly thereafter and began work on an album provisionally titled "Strange Obsessions" with Chas Chandler producing. This LP never came out (the Xdreamysts meanwhile only managed to get their Polydor LP released in Holland). Despite touring successfull in America (as captured by John T.Davis on film) and a fourth single in 1980, the band lost momentum after the shelving of their LP and had split by 1981.

Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains

A very inexperienced rock band flirts with fame thanks to a valuable assist from the media in this comedy-drama directed by veteran music producer Lou Adler. Corinne Burns (Diane Lane) is a fifteen-year-old orphan who gains a measure of local notoriety when she quits her job at a burger stand during a live television newscast. Corinne has few prospects but plenty of nerve, and she's formed a band with her sister Tracy (Marin Kanter) and cousin Jessica (Laura Dern) called the Stains. While checking out a gig by veteran hard rock band the Metal Corpses, led by flamboyant singer Lou Corpse (Fee Waybill), opened by British punk upstarts the Looters, Corrine sneaks backstage to ask advice just as Lou demands tour manager Lawnboy (Barry Ford) find a new opening act. Lawnboy impulsively gives the Stains the gig, and while the first show for the girls (who've had all of three practices) is little short of a disaster, Corrine's skunk-stripe hairdo, provocative clothes and defiant declaration "We don't put out" captures the attention of a television reporter who covered her before. A story on the evening news about the Stains turns the band into a cult sensation, and Looters lead singer Billy (Ray Winstone) tries to offer her some advice and emotional support as the Stains rise from opening act to headliners, but Corinne and her friends learn that their new fans are a very fickle breed. Shot in 1980 but released to only a handful of theaters in 1982, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains gained a potent cult following after it appeared on cable television, largely among punk rock fans -- the Looters featured Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols on guitar and drums as well as Paul Simonon from the Clash on bass, while L.A. punk troublemakers Black Randy and the Metrosquad briefly appear as themselves. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Release Date: October 1982 (USA)

Fruit Eating Bears - Gentle Creatures Despite Their Fierce Appearance (2002)

The Fruit Eating Bears were Neville Crozier (vocals/guitar), Gary Croudance (bass/vocals) and Chris Crash (drums) who came from the Croydon area and were originally known as The Bicycles Turds before highjacking the name of a little known 60's beat group, who's drummer Kenny Mundye was the band's original drummer before Chris Crash joined.
Both the band's singles were produced by Vic Maile, 'Chevy Heavy' / 'Fifties Cowboy' (Lightning, 1978) is the weaker single and was originally to have come out on Raw Records on green vinyl, but Lee Woods hated it and passed it on to Lightning.

"...but not before they'd put us in a photo shoot laying flat out completely covered in fruit!...and I mean covered, except our heads." Chris Penhale

Both sides of the follow up 'Door In My Face' / 'Going Thru The Motions' (DJM, 1978) is much better though still basic pub rock'n'roll. Their publishers Jackson Music bizarrely entered 'Door In My Face' in 'A Song For Europe', the UK heat for 'The Eurovision Song Contest'. The 'Bears performed the track on national TV, introduced by Terry Wogan. Unfortunately they finished joint 11th (out of 12). Terry Wogan, in this first encroachment of punk into Eurovision, described the bandas "gentle creatures despite their fierce appearance"
